Individual and Family Counseling

allison-spencer-pictureAllison Spencer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Mesa, Arizona and has over 10 years of experience providing therapy for individuals and families.  Allison received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Purdue University in 2005 and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis in 2007.  Allison completed her clinical training in the adult inpatient psychiatric unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.  She furthered her clinical training specializing in school social work and completing her practicum at Whiteside School District in Belleville, IL.  Throughout Allison’s career she has provided therapeutic interventions in elementary and middle schools, crisis, primary care, teen residential treatment, community mental health and hospitals.  Allison has also held the positions of assistant director and clinical supervisor for other therapists and case managers.

Allison is very passionate about working with children, adolescents and adults and has a special niche for teenagers and their families.  The most common reason teenagers seek treatment is because they are feeling depressed and anxious.  There are several possible causes for why they feel this way including low self esteem, thinking errors, problems with friends or family members, pressure to perform well in school, trauma, identity struggles, or any major life change such as a move or a loss.  In turn, they resort to unhealthy styles of coping such as isolating, lashing out, self-harming, addictions, and eating disorders.   Allison offers a safe, comfortable and non-judgmental environment in which to process situations that are causing problems and to discover alternative, healthy solutions. Her treatment approaches include family systems, strengths based, cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral.
